Vivo has returned with new information about the X Fold5, fresh from confirming that the device will be the first foldable to launch with a configurable side button. This time, the company has returned to the X Fold5's dimensions and weight, both of which it led with in its early teasers. To recap, Vivo previously claimed that the X Fold5 would launch as the world's lightest book-style foldable smartphone.
To demonstrate this, the company compared the weight of its new foldable against the X Fold3, the world's lightest foldable in its class as it stands. As we discussed at the time, the weighing scales used in the video implied that the X Fold5 was noticeably lighter than its predecessor. A new Weibo post by Vivo executive Han Bo Xiao suggests that Vivo's earlier video may have stretched the truth slightly.
According to Han Bo Xiao, the X Fold5 tips the scales 'about 20 grams lighter' than the X Fold3 Pro, not the X Fold3. As a result, the X Fold5 should officially weigh around 216 g, a mere 3 g reduction from the X Fold3. Moreover, the same executive highlights that the X Fold5 is 'about 2 mm thinner' than the X Fold3 Pro. For reference the X Fold3 Pro measures 11.2 mm when closed, which puts it between the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Galaxy Z Fold6 (curr. $1,049 - renewed on Amazon) in this regard.
Thus, the X Fold5 should come in at approximately 9.2 mm to match the Honor Magic V3 but fall short of the Oppo Find N5. A 9.2 mm overall thickness should translate to the X Fold5 measuring 4.2~4.35 mm in its opened state too, assuming typical bezel sizes. While Vivo has committed to releasing the X Fold5 in China on June 25, it has not revealed international release plans yet.
