The original Doom and Quake were monumental games that have shaped the FPS genre as a whole. Even today, there is a whole category of FPS titles that try to recreate the magic of those 90s classics. Dread Templar, an indie shooter by a single developer, not only takes the winning formula of Doom but also evolves it through smart gameplay choices.
The title is now enjoying a big discount on Steam, as you can get Dread Templar for just $3.99. This is the lowest price ever for the game. Described by JerekTheGamingDragon’s review (linked below) as "Quake meets Doom Eternal", Dread Templar is well worth its full price and is, therefore, a fantastic deal at 80% off.
Fantastic is also how you describe Dread Templar’s gameplay. Just like Doom Eternal, players are thrust into vast levels teeming with multiple different enemy types. From throwable katanas and a bow for long-range shots to destructive shotguns and rocket launchers for close-quarters combat, Dread Templar has a range of fun weapons to choose from. Moreover, Dread Templar also has its own “BFG”, a fan-favorite weapon type made famous by Doom.
Players can also power up these weapons by unlocking skills. Per Fulqrum, the publisher behind Dread Templar, players can “experiment with endless combinations of more than 100 different upgrades” for these weapons.
When it comes to length, Dread Templar has more than 25 levels with 9 boss fights. The main campaign reportedly takes around 10 hours to finish. Players can also sink hours upon hours into the “Guardian Mode”, a tower-defense mode where you have to protect an objective against waves of increasingly difficult enemies.
Finally, Dread Templar grounds the frantic and fast-paced campaign with a “Revenge Story” and an excellent soundtrack.
Dread Templar system requirements
Being an indie game with a retro-inspired pixelated art design, Dead Templar can run without any issue on even the modest modern hardware. For instance, a gaming PC equipped with a three-generation-old Ryzen 5 5600X and an RX 6600 should push the game comfortably beyond 100 FPS.
The official “Recommended” system requirements include:
- A CPU with a 3 GHz+ clock speed
- An Nvidia GTX 750 Ti GPU
- 4 GB of memory
- 2 GB of storage space
Long story short, if you are a fan of FPS titles like Doom with fast action, fun weapons, a great soundtrack, and hordes of enemies to mow down, Dread Templar is the game for you.
