Raspberry Pi has kicked off 2025 with a new release, shortly after we received information about what the company had in store for single-board computer (SBC) fans. Despite unveiling the Compute Module 5 (curr. $66.99 on Amazon) less than two months ago, the company has now given the Raspberry Pi 5 a refresh that should make the SBC more capable in some tasks.
As expected, Raspberry Pi has expanded its Pi 5 offering to include a 16 GB RAM variant, which was previously unavailable across the Pi ecosystem, at least officially. In a press release, Raspberry Pi explains that the new variant ships with LPPDR4X memory sourced from Micron, who supplied eight sets of 2 GB dies in a single package.
Everything else remains unchanged from the SBC's previous model variant. Thus, the device still utilizes Broadcom's BCM2712 chipset and features such as a 40-pin GPIO header for HAT expansion. Please see our original Raspberry Pi 5 launch article for full hardware details and how it differs from old Raspberry Pi models. The new Raspberry Pi 5 is orderable in multiple markets, including the US, where it retails for $120.
