SpaceX is working on a second generation of its Starlink Mini Kit that includes a compact, portable dish, that can be more easily transported everywhere.
According to a presentation at a Starlink vendor event, SpaceX will be upgrading both the Mini Kit and the Flat High-Performance dish that allows satellite Internet connectivity on moving vehicles and in bad weather as it offers wider field of view and better GPS capabilities.
The new Starlink Mini dish features are not yet clear, but one of Tesla's main goals with the second generation of its most compact satellite Internet kit could be to lower its pricing. It currently goes for $100 off over at Best Buy, and is still way more expensive than the Standard Kit dish that costs $349.99 there.
Gigabit Starlink satellite Internet download speeds
While the new Starlink Mini dish may be cheaper, SpaceX is preparing to upgrade its satellite Internet kits in terms of download speeds, too. At the vendor event, Starlink representatives have confirmed that there will be a new dish that will offer much faster, gigabit level Internet.
It is not clear if they meant the upcoming refresh of the Flat High-Performance dish, or something brand new that will also be marketed towards enterprise users. Last fall, SpaceX mentioned that it will be launching a constellation of V3 satellites that will provide more capacity per beam and bring up to 2 Gbps download speeds alongside lower latency.
The new gigabit Starlink dish still needs to pass through the FCC regulators where SpaceX is pushing for an increase in power limits, as well as for permission to operate at even lower altitudes.
If such deregulation happens, it may be able to provide higher Internet speeds to existing Starlink Internet users, including by dish aggregation, while they wait for the new dishes with wider band support that can take advantage of the upcoming V3 satellite constellation for gigabit network speeds.
