AMD has launched the brand new Radeon RX 9070 GRE in China. The card, which is now available for preorder in the country, is set to officially go on sale on May 8th. Specs-wise, we are looking at a pared-down Navi 48 GPU alongside 12 GB of VRAM. AMD claims that the RX 9070 GRE is around 6% faster than the RX 7900 GRE at 1440p/Ultra in 30 games that the company tested.
AMD’s performance claim for the RX 9070 GRE is quite enticing, as the RX 9070 GRE is attractively priced in China. If the RX 9070 GRE is indeed 6% faster than the RX 7900 GRE, the GPU could be an excellent buy for 1080p/1440p gaming.
RX 9070 GRE gaming performance
While we don’t have detailed benchmarks to base our opinions on, AMD maintains that the RX 9070 GRE plays:
- God of War: Ragnarok at 140 FPS
- Dragon Age: The Veilguard at 91 FPS
- Assassin’s Creed: Mirage at 127 FPS
- RE 4 Remake at 107 FPS
- Monster Hunter: Wilds at 80 FPS
- Doom Eternal with ray tracing at 182 FPS
Looking at our RX 7900 GRE performance data, the GPU runs RE 4 Remake at 105 FPS, which is practically the same as AMD’s number for the RX 9070 GRE. However, based on benchmarks from zWormzGaming and JegsTV, the RX 7900 GRE can reach an average FPS as high as 99 at 1440p/ultra, making the RX 9070 GRE a staggering 41% faster. So, Team Red’s claim of an average 6% advantage across a vast number of games for the RX 9070 GRE could be accurate.
That said, the RX 7900 GRE has 33.3% higher memory bandwidth. At 4K, the RX 7900 GRE’s higher memory bandwidth could help it overtake the RX 9070 GRE or, at the very least, match it.
Moving on to the comparison with the RX 9070, it is interesting to note that, per our database, the RX 9070 is only around 8% faster than the RX 7900 GRE in synthetic tests. However, per TechpowerUp’s 1440p gaming testing, the RX 9070 is around 15% ahead of the RX 7900 GRE.
In other words, the RX 9070 GRE will be slower than the RX 9070, but not by a whole lot.
RX 9070 GRE vs RTX 5070
Another interesting comparison can be made between the RX 9070 GRE and the RTX 5070. TechPowerUp’s testing places the RTX 5070 around 10% ahead of the RX 7900 GRE at 1440p. This puts the RX 9070 GRE in spitting distance of the RTX 5070 if we go by AMD’s numbers.
Compared to the RTX 5070, the RX 9070 GRE has the same 12 GB VRAM size, 30 W lower TDP, and starts at the equivalent of $450 in China. At $100 cheaper, the RX 9070 GRE could handily beat the RTX 5070 in price/performance if the US pricing of the card is in line with the Chinese one.
Before we wrap this up, it is important to mention that the performance figures and projections shared here are based on AMD’s claims regarding the RX 9070 GRE. Independent testing could yield different results, which would affect the conclusions drawn.
